We are two Scots who moved to a tiny island in Atlantic Canada and discovered that no one was making traditional UK ciders. We decided that needed to change.
Welcome to the highlands of the Island. We are Anne and Alex Jamieson, the owners and operators of Riverdale Orchard and Cidery. When we moved from Scotland to Prince Edward Island in 2014, we had no idea we would soon become full-time professional cider makers and apple growers. Now we wouldn’t have it any other way!
When we began sampling Canadian ciders, we noticed they were a lot sweeter than the traditional hard ciders we were accustomed to enjoying in the UK. That’s all it took for us to decide we would open our own cidery and introduce Islanders to the UK-style of ciders we have always loved: pure, crisp, and natural.
Over the next three years, we honed our knowledge and skills in the craft of cider-making, attending Cornell University to complete the National Association of Cider Makers certification and visiting the Three Counties of England to work with and learn from award-winning cider makers.
By the summer of 2018, our first batch of cider was ready to introduce to the world and we opened the doors to Riverdale Orchard & Cidery.
Today, we’re dedicated to crafting artisanal hard ciders that celebrate the humble-yet-mighty apple. We handcraft all of our ciders in small batches at our cidery in Riverdale, ensuring every batch meets the highest standards of quality control.
In the longstanding tradition of UK cider makers, we do not add anything to our ciders – no sulfites, yeasts, hops, grains, water, flavourings, or juice concentrates.
The result is pure fermented apple bliss in a bottle, ready for you to savour.
When we set out on our cider-making journey, we wanted to be all in. To us, that meant taking the farm-to-table philosophy and adapting it to our cider-making operation.
Sure, it’s possible to run a cidery without growing your own apples, but where’s the fun in that? There’s just something extra special about taking fruit from a tree you’ve planted with your own hands and turning it into a crisp, delicious cider.
We call it our orchard-to-bottle philosophy and each year we proudly source more and more of our cider apples from our budding orchard.
Visitors, young and old, are invited to explore our Riverdale orchard, which matures and expands every year. It’s a gorgeous piece of paradise all year round, but especially in late spring when the trees are blossoming and late summer/early fall when they are fruiting.
We now have over 3,000 apple trees and grow 15 different varieties including Regal Gala, Cortland, Golden Delicious, Nova Mac, Red Jonagold, Liberty, Northern Spy, Enterprise, Honeycrisp, Vista Bella, Malus Dolgo( Crab Apple), Kingston Black, Dabinette, Sweet Coppin, and Yarlington Mill.
We warmly invite you to visit our Riverdale cidery any time of the year and discover how we craft our ciders with skill, patience, and lots of love.
This is where the magic happens. Where we transform crisp Island apples into bottles of premium cider.
Inside, you’ll find a tasting and viewing room, as well as a small commercial kitchen, indoor seating, and public washrooms. Outside, you’re invited to while away the hours on our sun-soaked deck overlooking the rolling hills and fields and take a stroll around the orchard.
Pick up our bottled ciders to take home and enjoy, or order up a pint from our selection on tap. We also sell freshly baked Scottish treats and delicious homemade meals, all prepared in-house by Anne. You’re welcome to take your food away, savour it on the deck, or eat at one of our picnic pods on the grounds.
We hope you’ll love our piece of paradise in Riverdale as much as we do!
